Shelf Life with Jennifer J. Chow
Welcome to The Wren's bookish feature that pulls the curtain back on the lives of the authors behind the book spine.
Welcome back to Shelf Life, my cozy corner of What Spine is Yours, where we linger over the stories behind the stories and savor the moments that shape a writer’s heart. Today’s visit feels especially comforting, like the crackle of parchment paper and the promise tucked inside a freshly baked treat.
Our guest writes mysteries infused with magic, meaning, and heritage, blending food, family, and culture into stories that feel both intimate and expansive. There is a sense of hope woven through her work, a reminder that identity, tradition, and imagination can coexist beautifully, even when a mystery is afoot.
Pull up a chair, Spine Sparrows, for a conversation filled with heart, insight, and just a hint of sweetness.
Today’s featured author is Jennifer J. Chow. Jennifer writes cozies filled with hope and heritage. She has been a finalist for the Agatha, Anthony, Lefty, and Lilian Jackson Braun Memorial Award. Getting to Know Jennifer
Welcome to “Shelf Life,” Jennifer! Every author has a story behind their stories. What first inspired you to start writing?
Reading! Going to the library and realizing that I could be an author and write as a job.
This is why we love our local libraries. Support them as much as you can, Spine Sparrows! So, Jennifer, how did you meet your character, Felicity Jin? What made you want to tell her story?
It all started with a school field trip to San Francisco’s Chinatown and visiting a fortune cookie factory. I’ve often felt that the duality of my Asian Americanness can be symbolized by the fortune cookie. Years later, when I wanted to combine magic and food into a mystery, the Jin Bakery and my protagonist, Felicity, were born.
What a beautiful source of inspiration! When you’re not writing, where/how might readers find you recharging your creative batteries?
Out in nature. I live by the beach, so I’ll often go there to relax and watch the waves.
The Heart of Jennifer’s Stories
What themes or ideas do you find yourself coming back to repeatedly in your work?
Family (whether found or biological), food (I’m a foodie at heart!), and culture (observations ranging from cuisine to immigration).
All three of these are so important AND relatable. If your stories had a signature scent (like a candle or perfume), what would it smell like?
Vanilla (for comfort) and pandan (for heritage)
Ooo, I don’t think I know what pandan smells like; I’ll have to check it out. Anything paired with vanilla is a winner for me. Which of your characters would make the best dinner guest—and what would you serve them?
Detective Sun because I’d like to pick her cop brain. Maybe tangerine beef since she seems to like oranges.
It’s always wise to be on the good side of your detectives, and going through their stomachs seems like a good choice!
On Inspiration & The Writing Life
What’s a book or author that’s left a lasting mark on you?
Amy Tan for being the first Asian American author I saw in the limelight.
This is why representation is so important; we all deserve to feel seen!
Jennifer, what part of the writing process brings you the most joy, and which part makes you reach for another cup of coffee/tea/something more substantial?
Creating and escaping into a world brings me the most joy. Revising for the umpteenth time drags down my spirit.
If you could share one piece of advice with aspiring writers, what would it be?
Make a list of tiny and huge goals; whenever you get a little success, reward yourself.
A little celebration goes a long way!
On Your Shelf Life
Since this is “Shelf Life,” I must ask, if I peeked at your real-life bookshelf right now, what book would surprise us most?
Waypoint Kangaroo by Curtis C. Chen; it’s a high-tech SF novel. I often venture into different genres when going to local book events and meeting authors.
That’s got to be one of the most unique titles we’ve ever had here on What Spine is Yours! What’s one shelf-worthy milestone or achievement from your writing journey that you’re especially proud of?
Getting nominated for the Lilian Jackson Braun Award.
It doesn’t get much better than that, I tell you. Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing “yourshelf” with me today. What’s next for you? Any exciting new stories readers should keep an eye out for?
The next book in my Magical Fortune Cookie series, Tell-Tale Treats, comes out on January 27th!
That’s certainly something to celebrate. Spine Sparrows, you know what to do!
